Buses – ENTIRE Island
The bus system is a great way to get around and see the island (virtually the whole island)! The first thing to note is that you MUST have exact change. And yes, you can ride the bus ALL the way to the North Shore (for the price of a one-way ticket) – http://haleiwatown.com/.
All buses are tracked via GPS – on a wi-fi enabled smart phone or iPad Google “Bus to . . . North Shore, Diamondhead, Iolani palace (must see), Pearl Harbor . . .”) and it will give the time and place to get your bus. If you have questions for the bus driver, they are VERY patient – do not worry about having to hurry on or off the bus.
The Bus – a great bus system.
Bus Rates
- $2.75 each way ($5.50 for an ALL DAY pass)
- If you are aged 65 or older, MAKE SURE to bring your Medicare card and you will get much lower rates! – $1.00 each way ($2.00 for an ALL DAY pass)
NOTE: Get the ALL DAY pass if you are planning to ride more than once in a day!
http://www.iolanipalace.org/ palace near downtown Honolulu and China town – after the palace walk downtown and look around and maybe eat.
Rental Car
If you find you do want to drive around the island, we suggest you rent a car for a weekend from Enterprise – if you go on-line to Enterprise.com request the Weekend Rate (usually Friday Noon to Monday Noon and it should by around $50 for the Weekend). But search for Honolulu, not Waikiki – we have been told they do not offer weekend rates for Waikiki – only very high rates. There are a number of Ala Moana locations you can reach very easily by bus (or even walk). And find a place on the street (even if a several blocks away – the walk is nice!) to save the nightly hotel parking rate of $35 a night or so – just make sure you check the street signs for any parking restrictions.
